Balmain stay top after war of words

» Posted by Jackson on 03-Jun-08

Balmain firsts held out Gladesville 2-1 on Sunday despite finishing the game with just nine men, to retain the league lead at the halfway point of the season. Reserves lost 1-0 to the league leaders but remain well placed for a run to the semis in the back half of the season.

As I missed the match, feel free to add any details or big performers in the comments.

Did, for example, first grade use any of these tactics in holding out at the death?

Balmain started the match with some scintillating football, moving the ball across the wide flat park with apparent ease. With so much possession Balmain inevitably scored twice in the 1st 30 minutes through talismanic lozza with some great lead-up work from the midfield and Lil' Johnnie. The 20 minute walk to the changerooms through the falling rain did little to dampen the spirits of the visiting team at half time.

The home team came out strongly in the 2nd half enjoying more possession as the Tigers failed to consolidate their infamous 2 nil advantage. With 20 mins to go, there was, let's say, a turning point in the game, a Balmain player decided to express some concerns to the referee and was promptly shown a red card, 5 mins later another Balmain player was punished for encouraging his own team with some colourful language which drew a colourful response from the referee issuing another straight red. Gladesville buoyed by their 2 man advantage began to stretch the visiting team across the park resulting in an un-marked man in the box heading home at the far post. Some comical football ensued in the short time left with a passage of play that included a rugby tackle, and 3 or 4 challenges that got more shin than ball within a 30 sec period, the referee only pulling up play when criticised from the bench, the critics punishment was being sent from the only available shelter and made to stand in the rain. The referee whistled an end to proceedings not before dismissing a Gladesville player for another slight of the tongue, Balmain ending up lucky yet deserved winners.

It will be an interesting tribunal meeting this week, i'll be contesting my punishment offering tourette's syndrome as my defence!?!

Balmain 2 Gladesville 1 Referee 3

We have a winner!

Amazing the things the referee decided to send people off for, compared to the late, knee high, studs up, agricultural tackles, rugby style wrestling and other crap that he lets go.

Also being told to "f*** off c***" right in front of the referee by a player that has just studded your knee causing you to be sent off for swearing in frustration, is a little hard to take.

I have never played a team that whinged and moaned and appealed to the referee so much in an attempt to get opposition players yellow and red cards (and that includes the muppet coach who obviously spreads the cancer from the head down). Lame in the extreme.

As a Balmain legend was heard to say on the day... "it was sheer spasticity!"
