Spartan Stalemate
After the disappointment of seeing the first game of the season against Sydney Wanderers washed out only 10 minutes before kick-off, Balmain earned a point in their first game of the season after a 0-0 draw against Blacktown Spartans at Lambert Park on Saturday night.
Football NSW's roving reporter and Jeremy Pettenon's biggest fan, Frank Speranza, was there to cover the game so we'll leave this week's match report in his capable hands. Don't be fooled by the headline though, we are in fact playing in division one this year.
John Sowden was at the game with his camera and has once again taken a tremendous bunch of photos of the first grade game.
In the earlier game, the under 20s concede a couple of sloppy early goals and were always behind the eight ball. At 3-0 down 5 minutes before half time the game looked over, but a goal just before the break sparked a bit of hope. A much improved second half saw the Tigers create a number of chances, but they were unable to capitalise and ended up conceding again at the death, with players pushed forward in search of a goal. Final score 4-1 to the Spartans.
Next up is the postponed game against Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday night, with the under 20s kicking off at 6:30pm and first grade at 8:30pm.
In other good news, training moves back to Birchgrove Oval from this Thursday night.
