The rule of claw

The Tigers this season are nothing if not consistent. Yesterday afternoon away to Inter Lions at Concord Oval it was more of the same from the Tigers you know and love and curse and jeer. The Under 20s dominated but were beaten at the death 2-1, while First Grade had the better chances but could not bury even one, as the game ended 0-0. You can check out John Sowden's photos here.

First off, the club has a new Captain in Eamonn Byrne, as it was announced on Sunday. He is one of Balmain's longest serving players, and has been especially vocal in the dressing room this season. Congratulations "Flamin" Eamonn Byrne.

On the field, Sunday was another difficult day for Balmain.

Under 20s fell to Inter 2-1. A great goal from the D-Train gave the Tigers a deserved first-half lead, but two scrappy goals late in the second half gifted the points to the Lions.

U20s photos are here.

In First Grade, the Tigers were a lick of paint away from a first victory of 2009. McCormack's late header that came back off the upright was the closest in a series of near-misses for Balmain.

The highly fancied home side were played off the park for significant stretches of the game by the desperate Tigers. Yet a breakthrough was not forthcoming for either side, as Balmain recorded its fifth draw in seven games, four of them scoreless. Captain Byrne was named man of the match at the Monkey Bar after the game.

Finally, a warm congratulations to former Tiger player Dave Tucker and wife Jen who are expecting a child later this year. Dave, you always were dangerous going forward.

And now, over to MrX...

Rewarding mediocrity is not how the X roles so I wil be a bit more critical of your new cap i tan and rain on his little parade. I watched him try and put the armband on in the sheds and to say it was awkward is a huge understatement. Velcro is obviously outside of his skill set and the theory of soft fuzzy bit on hard bristley bit is too difficult for our new leader. Yeah he won every header, a few crucial tackles and didnt give Ivo a moments peace but I feel you need more than that from a captain. Julius Cambell from Remeber the Titans ,Charlie Conway in Mighty Ducks The dog out of that movie where the dog can play soccer all of these are great sporting leaders, I dont think Eamon with 2 n's is in that group just yet and for one very valid reason he lost the toss. Tails never fails Eamonn ever heard that?????It rhymes mate it must be right (Liams effort at overhead was noted but will not be considered due to it looking more like a seizure of some kind)
Halftime saw the only real highlight for me from Leo with two superb free kicks. Steve deserves a mention for a through ball in the 20s that was measured almost as well as the through ball from the #40 in reserve grade last week. So the question still remains where will we find goals? The Egyptian kid but he has obviously signed a big money deal somewhere else (underwear/bike pant modelling)so next in line is Johnny but hes out for the year so we are down to our new captain but he gets a nosebleed going forward so we are down to Jem who showed how accurate he can be last week by somehow managing to avoid the goal when the angle and physics said he couldnt. So Jem as you can see its down to you mate mostly because of issues with 6 or 7 other blokes however its down to you. Good luck in the cup boys tactics are hold for nill all and take them on penalties.

Mr X. The toss was actually won by the Tigers. I firmly stated that we would run towards the Concord Road end first. This was to nullify the Lions attack so they wouldn't be running towards the Parramatta Road end (or Concord Oval Kop for any historians out there) in the second half, where it was standing room only for the Lions die-hards. As for the armband, I've seen easier 1000 piece jig-saws easier to assemble than that bloody thing.

If MrX ever reveals his identity I can pass on my old year 3 school teachers contact number. A brush up on X's spelling and grammar wouldn't go astray.

Surely Hardwick's two attempts at winning a penalty were highlights X? I haven't seen dives that bad since the preliminary rounds of the Commonwealth games when they let some poor kid from the Turks and Caicos Islands fall in backwards.

If only it was a broken jaw. I'd be in far less pain..... Danny Buderus had his doubters too, as did Steven Gerrard, not to mention Liz Ellis'. It's like water of a ducks back MrX. Not unless 'When Harry Met Sally' was on tv tonight would I miss the game.

Max Vieri? I thought you wanted a player who can score goals.

Massimo taibi and Sally Robbins had their doubters too and you know what they were exactly right ! Love Actually is on tonight so I guess you wont be there. We are a team of Tigers mate not ducks??
