Tigers' time arrives

» Posted by Jackson on 10-May-09

Balmain Tigers scored a sensational double victory away to Hills Brumbies on Saturday night, winning Under 20s 3-1 before claiming a smashing 4-0 First Grade domination. Check out John Sowden's fantastic images here.

Under 20s got the ball rolling with a deserved 3-1 victory. Despite conceding the first goal (I was told), Balmain stormed back and took control of the match with three goals, none of which I saw (too focused on our game/trying to navigate). Can any players or supporters provide some highlights in the comments section below?

First Grade destroyed Hills. Two goals in either half was a fair reflection of the game, as Balmain secured their first win since last year's Grand Final.

Dave McPartling made the all-important breakthrough, guiding a divine first-time volley into the net off a Tom Sowden back post cross. Lorenzo Merlino might have had a penalty saved, but he made amends moment before half-time. In behind the defence, Jem Richardson slotted the ball past the keeper only to see it bounce back off the post. Lozza made it count with the rebound.

Though it was 2-0 to Balmain at half-time, Hills had two glorious opportunities in the first half, one which involved three goal line clearances from the desperate Tigers. The Tigers knew that there was work to do before they could claim victory.

Their work brought reward early in the second half. Balmain repeatedly stormed through gaping holes down Hills' left, and half clearances from Hills defenders were punished twice. Craig Andrews struck to make it three, then one of Craig's midfield colleagues notched the all-importance fourth goal before going insane celebrating.

The final half-hour brought plenty of action but no more goals, and a late appearance from Tom Wylob. Tom - is that your first grade debut?

Next week things are only getting hotter, with a clash against old rivals UNSW. Game on!

Well.......! highlights from the 20s game where do I start goalkicks ,reflex saves, crosses taken a halftime rev up sir Alex would have been proud of and that was all just the gk whos name escapes me at the moment.Did get chipped and his substitution was the catalyst for the turnaround in the game. As for first grade what a performance led by our sometimes lacking in fibre captain. A great performance by all! However special mentions to Loz Jezza Chris Dave Jem Craig Jacko Carl (memorable celebration for the 4th) Eamonnn and swoden for sub par performances. Both Gks were our best Hiro rock solid but Hills custodian was a clear stand out for us. On a serious note though we were outstanding and not to contradict the last post as we are heading into winter to say "its getting hotter" is just silly but the students next week will be tough so man up. Eamonn look forward to your take on Julia Roberts in Notting Hill this week at training. "Im just a girl standing in front of a boy asking him to love her" You do that line better than X. Well done boys!

Ivan must take alot of the credit for both wins on the weekend. His halftime substitution of the u/20's keeper lifted team spirits throughout the entire squad, as an aggregate score of 7-0 from that time onwards proved decisive. (0-1 down until that point). If I had my lawn bowls cap on in would have been bowed to you Ivan.
I recall my walk down Portobello Road as an awe struck tourist in my time living in London. The song title of Ronan Keating best sums up the entire 'Notting Hill' movie. "You say it best when you say nothing at all." X take particular note of that.

MrX's taste in boy bands aside .. I just want to know how Tom got the credit for that ripping dipping cross for the first goal. The number of extreme Tom close-ups in the photos have decreased recently, it must be because Mr Sowden is busy writing the match reports now.

I mistakenly trusted Tom's claims to an assist when he was recounting the goal after the match. Obviously, I was too busy practising my spirit fingers in midfield in see the actual cross.

On another note: I've got 3 raffle tickets for sale. I'll sell them for $40 each.

Good point Spud I wanted to Comment on Swoden snr's Hooliganism at the end of the game there is no room for that sort of behaviour at our club. We are lucky noone was hurt.

I agree with Mr X,

Swoden Snr was out of line.. If you're going to be a Hooligan at least fly the correct scarf.. Someone make him a Balmain Scarf..

Can any of the Ladies Tigers Fan club knit?

X is a skilled crochet artist, water colour impressionalist and an established haiku poet, he will work on the scarf. Jackson spirit fingers were noted by X and did influence the result. On a side note the bottle of scotch was the best $8 you have ever spent.

Is there any field X isn't a skilled marksman at. I definately agree that you are an artist. A BS artist would be the kindest way of describing it.
I've just returned from a meeting with the NSWFA. Sowden Snr is already on their unruly fans profile list. Apparently his little incident in 1987 at the Chelsea v Millwall game at The Den didn't go unnoticed.

Someone may have to point Sowden Snr towards the NSWFA, SSHH Campaign..

The following rules are in place next weekend,

Spectators role
- Speak quietly on the sideline
- Avoid making comments to players and
officials from the sideline
- Offer a low-key applaud when a goal is
scored

Coaches Role
- Encourage the players to make their own decisions
- Keep coaching instructions to a minimum
- Only shout tactical instructions when absolutely
necessary
- Is asked to communicate to players via substitution
- Actively encourages silence on the sidelines

By the way this is not made up.

Communicate by substitution what does that mean do you have to take someone off to tell them to push on the last defender????
And if so what could Al be telling me I mean the 20s GK by constantly having him on the bench is he saying he likes talking with me??
Mumbled speaking ,Low key applause, no tactical instruction sounds like an episode of Les Murrays football Asia

X's Role
Be awesome

Job Done

The key objective for this weekend is to have fun, build community spirit and raise money by being silent on the sidelines.

Give the genius who thought that one up a promotion!
