Reserve Grade Double Winners
Reserve Grade celebrate after their grand final victory

Balmain 1st Grade were left rueing missed chances and a debatable sending off as they were beaten by Transandinos in a penalty shoot out. To boot, feeling left out on the sideline from bad decisions in the middle, the assisstant referee also flagged for a penalty to be retaken as Svend (how bigs my chest) Geertsen saved brilliantly during the shootout. When its not your day…..!!
2 hours previous though it had started so brightly for Balmain as they slowly began to take control of their opposition in a very tight game. Coach Campbells tactic of packing out the midfield anchored By Jackson GS and Matt Jaff was begining to pay off as transandinos began to tire. Even their talented midfielder Carlo Falldownalotta was begining to fade as the relentless Balmain pressure took its toll. Then came the first controvesy of the day with 10 mins gone in the 2nd half Dave Hardwick was shown a straight red by a thrill seeking ref who deemed his attempt to trap the ball dangerous! Reduced to 10 men Balmain rose to the challenge and from there on in had several chances, with Nick Flower, Steve Lewis and Dan Ault all bringing great saves from the Tranny keeper Noberto Gloveinio. Extra time could not break the deadlock and the rest is history. It was hard to hide the dissappointment on all involved with the club after such a magnificent season but such is this beautiful game we play, it will make us only better and stronger for next year.
On a far brighter note the relentless reserves took out the Grand Final with a 2-1 win over Sydney Cedars with goals from Dylan (10 touches) Zammit and Grant Burgess. In fact the scoreline does not reflect the vast superiority Balmain enjoyed as they took this game by the scruff of the neck. Nevertheless as chance after chance went begging it was sheer relief for Coaches Kaltenegger and Warnick when the final whistle went and another double was completed in the space of 3 seasons.
So there you have it for another season. 2 Grades, 2 Premierships, 1 Grand Final Winner and 1 Runner up. Without doubt the best season in this clubs short history. All made possible by Great Coach, Committee, Players, Sponsors and Fans. Thanks to everyone involved this year and Does anyone fancy a kick around this Sat as I’m not doing anything!!
We have dedicated a photo album to grand final day in the gallery. Be sure to also check out the Video Clips gallery as we have the Grant Burgess winner for reserve grade and also the controversial “Svengate” penalty save that was deemed illegal.
